1. What is a Japanese futon?

A Japanese futon, also known as a "shikibuton", is a traditional style of mattress in Japan. It consists of a mattress usually 3 inches thick, made out of cotton or wool. Usually hand made.

  2. How firm are Shikibutons?

The firmness of a Shikibuton depends on the size of your mattress and the material used. The traditional Japanese futon is 3-inches thick, which is incredibly firm. People who try my bed out claim that it feels like a "prison" bed. Because of its firmness, it may take some time to adjust to it. But be patient, and understand that your body is supposed to be on a firm mattress. After about 1-2 weeks, you will adjust to the firmness. If you want, you can purchase a 6-9 inch mattress for a little more cushion but still very firm. Thicker options here (select 5 inch)

  3. Do you need Tatami Mats?

You can use a Shikibuton without a tatami mat, but it's recommended to use one to prevent mold and keep the Shikibuton fresh. However, I slept without a tatami mat for a year and had no issues. Link here for my tatami mat.

  4. Best Tatami Mat to purchase?

Most tatami mats on Amazon seem like a scam. They are super thin and not traditional. Tatami mats are usually hand-woven, thick, and expensive. But investing in the right one is best. Link here for my tatami mat.

  5. Can I use a futon on a carpeted floor?

Yes, you can use a futon on a carpeted floor, but you should air it out regularly to prevent moisture build-up.

  6. How do you clean a futon?

Futons should be aired out regularly to prevent mold and dust mites. Any stains can be spot cleaned with a mild detergent. Also, putting them in the sun is recommended.

  7. How often should you replace a futon?

With proper care, a good quality futon can last up to 10 years.

  8. Can two people sleep on a futon?

While futons come in different sizes, they are typically designed for one person. However, larger sizes can accommodate two people. My size is FULL and fits me and my girlfriend just fine.

  9. What pillows do you recommend?

Update (March 24th 2024) I am now using organic cotton pillows, highly recommend. Check them out here

  10. Do I need a bed frame for a futon?

No, traditional Japanese futons are designed to be laid out directly on the floor, but the tatami bed, like the one I use, is a great option, but they are a bit expensive. Link to my bed frame

  11. Are Japanese futons expensive?

You can find some very cheap, but you can also find them on the pricier side. To get a natural, traditional, chemical-free shikibuton, I would recommend having a budget from $300-$600 total. But I’ve seen them as cheap as $150 and up to $1200.

  12. Can I use a regular bed sheet on a futon?

I use a size up from my shikibuton size. I also recommend purchasing 100% linen sheets (from flax seed) this is far superior than cotton in my opinion. I use a traditional fitted sheet. Link here for that.

  13. How do I store a futon?

When not in use, a futon should be folded up and/or stored in a closet to keep it clean and fresh. However, this is not crucial. I leave mine fully out sometimes and it’s fine.

  14. Where do you find a chemical-free futon?

The futon I have is from the futon shop, which they claim is chemical-free. I would either purchase from them, or do research or send a message to the company you want to buy from and ask what chemicals they use as flame retardants.

  15. Are futons suitable for all ages?

People actually report using these for children. It makes sense to me and tons of moms talk about the benefits of floor sleeping for kids, as they don’t have the risk of falling out of the bed. You can do more research on it, and this is a great option for those who are worried about toxic exposure to children.

  16. Can I use a futon if I have allergies?

Yes, futons are hypoallergenic, especially if you choose one with a natural cotton filling.

  17. How long does it take to adjust to a shikibuton?

I would say around 2 weeks up to a month. GIVE IT TIME. Be patient. These mattresses are very firm. But once you get use to them you are set!

  18. Where to buy the best shikibuton?

I recommend the futon shop, but you can purchase from amazon, or etsy.

Common question - how is the sex?

This is a bit personal, haha but let me do my best to answer this as PG as possible.

It depends on your preference, but theres nothing worse than sinking into a bed while having sex, as a man it can be actually difficult to have sex in really soft beds. So i actually prefer a shikibuton for having sex over anything else in the world. So my answer is, it’s great, comfortable and the preferred way to have sex due to it’s firmness. And from my girlfriend, she says she loves it!
